Paris: drop in occupancy during the first 10 months of 2013

Figures from the Observatoire Economique du Tourisme Parisien show a slump in tourist occupancy in the capital during the first ten months of 2013. Between January and October, Parisian hotels welcomed over 13 million visitors, or 0.4% fewer than during the same period last year. On the whole, 7.8 million tourists came from other countries while 5.2 million were French. Overnight stays also showed a 0.7% drop compared to last year, but remain greater than the 31 million mark that was surpassed in 2012.While foreign arrivals continued to progress across the period, resulting in a 5.2% increase in hotel arrivals in the capital and 4% more nights, the French market outweighed it with a 7.6% drop in terms of arrivals and a 9.6% drop in terms of nights. The slump in domestic clientele thus drives results downward. The Chinese market is amongst those that grew the most in 2013, with a 26% increase in arrivals, followed by the United States (+16.5%) and Germany (+4%). The primary supply markets for the capital continue to be the United States (1.4 million arrivals), the United Kingdom (906,316 arrivals) and Germany (518,476 arrivals).
