The inauguration of its first hotel in 1976, long before the rise of Ecotourism in the 1990s, was unprecedented in South America. Now welcoming over 65,000 visitors each year, Inkaterra owns five locations around Peru, with plans to expand within the country. The company is reported to have generated $11 million in revenue last year, with a projected $14 million’s objective in 2012.Company Development Finalist in last year’s Hospitality Awards in the Best initiative in sustainable development category, Inkaterra illustrates its original approach for almost 40 years. Inkaterra has won the WT&TC 2012 award for Conservation; earlier this year it was awarded the Green Choice Sustainable Tourism certification, the first for a hotel group in South America. Its debut hotel, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, is located next to the Madre de Dios River and consists of 35 private thatched-roof lodges or “cabañas” offering luxury shelter in the middle of the rainforest, not far from the Brazilian and the Bolivian borders. In 1991 Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel followed, and is now arguably the most successful of the locations, having been declared one of the “World’s Best Hotels” and nominated as South America’s Leading Green Hotel for the fifth consecutive year.
