SUNCARE addresses sustainability initiatives as per the triple-bottom line approach of environmental, social and financial responsibilities by finding innovative ways to do more with less.
In an age of vanishing resources and extreme polarization, it seemed essential to think about our greater purpose. Times like these present an opportunity to use our scale and reach to act as a positive force for change―and we intend to leverage our power to build a better world.
Deeply embedded within our DNA is a desire to move the world forward, and create meaningful change within our own company and the communities we serve. This is why, in the 35 years since Sun Limited was born, we have undertaken innumerable initiatives that have had a direct and powerful impact on our communities, environment, and governance. In 2016, we set an ambition to create an entity that englobes these initiatives: SUNCARE. This entity is built around three primary areas of focus: Community Engagement, Environment, and Sustainable Business Values.
SUNCARE isn’t just an initiative, an obligation, or a box that we check. It is a philosophy, a way of doing things that is embedded at every level of our Group. As an organization that embraces ethics, transparency, and accountability, we have chosen to register SUNCARE as a Non-Profit
Organization that operate independently
SUNCARE focuses on four big projects that take into account our Profit, the Planet and its People: SUN Children Cancer Trust, our local community-based projects, marine conservation, and our endemic trees project—all of which are aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
We have set up the SUNCARE Foundation, which enables us to help fund these projects. The Foundation offers guests staying at our Sun Resorts properties the chance to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to local community and environmental projects through a small donation.
Each one of our hotels reaches out to their surrounding community: Ambre, Long Beach, Sugar Beach, La Pirogue, and Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club support Mare La Chaux Government School, Flacq Disabled Centre, Flic en Flac Government School, SOS Children’s Village in Bambous, and Foundation ALEF in Trou d’Eau Douce respectively.
We support an integrated and unified approach to Sustainability across Sun. Our Committee provides oversight to our sustainability targets and guidance on matters of good governance, disclosure, and transparency.
We are investing in disruptive innovations and enterprise-wide strategies to cut our carbon emissions, water use, ban plastic straws, optimize waste management, and build sustainable infrastructure. Sun Resorts is the first hotel group to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Mauritius to fund and support research in the field of Sustainable Tourism.
We are 3700 men and women, united by the same desire to serve others, and driven by a common promise: we can do well by doing good.
