Through Shine, our Global Sustainability Programme, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts worldwide aims to give back and contribute towards the prosperity of each destination where we operate. Our sustainability practices are grouped around three key pillars – Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability, with Education forming the common thread amongst the three.

We believe that education is not only key in fighting poverty, it also opens doors to new opportunities. Institutional Education and academic skills play a key part in getting better jobs, thus improving the living standards of people and their families.

Our company has introduced a new vision based on the concept ‘we make moments’. The vision comes from the brand values which encompass aspects of sustainability and the environment and thread these through everything the company does.

Environmental Sustainability

At Mövenpick, we don’t just pay lip service to CSR – it is part of our company vision. Our sustainability certification partner is Green Globe, and our hotels are put through a rigorous inspection process to prove their credentials, covering everything from energy and water usage efficiency to the use of locally supplied sustainable ingredients in our restaurant food.

Green Globe is a global certification for sustainable tourism with one of the most comprehensive criteria there is. It covers sustainable management, social and economic sustainability, and cultural heritage as well as the environmental impact of certified companies.

We made history in 2016 by becoming the most Green Globe certified hotel company in the world. Its 2015 report recorded our overall average compliance score as 84%, an impressive 2.5 points higher than the 81.5% average across all Green Globe certified members worldwide. By the end of 2016, 63 of our properties were Green Globe certified, with 35 achieving the prestigious Green Globe Gold Member status.

Green Globe‘s criteria is too exhaustive to list in its entirety here, but to achieve certification companies have to provide a code of conduct for activities in local communities, and do so in collaboration and with the consent of those communities. They also need to reduce pollution from soil contaminant, ozone-depleting compounds, erosion, runoff and even noise and light pollution.

Even the decoration of Mövenpick’s hotels comes under examination with the use of local art, architecture and cultural heritage in their decoration, food and shops while respecting local intellectual property rights being one of the criteria.

Social Sustainability

Whether supporting local charitable institutions or small businesses in the area, we strive to positively impact the communities we operate in.

We are the most green certified hotel company in the world. We encourage our hotels to meet the highest criteria and put them at the top of their game, Simultaneously we also encourage our local staff to support charity and our company itself supports a number of charities around the world. It’s more than just an environmental programme it goes to educational and social access.

Social Sustainability encompasses community support at large which includes helping institutions focusing on special, primary needs of the community. Our hotels are involved in charitable activities of all sorts and contributing to their surrounding communities, showing that Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts holds these matters dearly at heart.

Throughout the year, our hoetls are encouraged to provide assistance and support local charitable organisation, to get involved in various community activities as well as support local craftsmanship and suppliers by purchasing products created or produced within the country.
