Campaign - New Masters programs – innovative teaching, industry engagement

The simultaneous launch of 3 innovative new Master’s programs has announced Glion as a serious force in graduate education for hospitality and related industries.

In an increasingly competitive job market, Glion’s challenge was to find new ways to meet the growing appetite for graduate education. The answer: an ambitious plan to create an authoritative Graduate School, offering a wide variety of graduate programs that would increase Glion’s visibility – and enhance its reputation – in the worlds of academia, hospitality and beyond.

A Graduate School needs a comprehensive graduate program offer. This had to be built in a way that would expand the school’s academic reach while staying true to its hospitality ‘DNA’; at the same time complementing the existing Master’s program.

In September 2019, Glion’s vision became a reality, when the first batches of students arrived in Switzerland and London to start three distinctive new Master of Science (MSc) programs:

• MSc in Luxury Management and Guest Experience
• MSc in Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation
• MSc in Finance, Real Estate and Hotel Development

Innovative content with a hospitality thread throughout
A vast amount of preparatory work went into authoring these programs and validating their academic content against international norms and accreditation criteria – in particular ensuring teaching methodologies and grading are consistent with established Glion requirements.

While providing the correct level of quality assurance, the academic validation process has not stifled the innovative nature of these programs. For example:

• MSc in Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation / MSc in Luxury, Management and Guest Experience – both programs partnered with The Dedica Anthology Hotels to create a “Hackathon” to develop students’ problem-solving skills, time management, multicultural collaboration, entrepreneurial perspective and project management. Glion’s adaptation of the Hackathon (“Hack Marathon”) pitched student teams against each other to find solutions to a specific business challenge. Students worked intensively and under pressure for 48 hours to create pitches, presentations and concrete illustrations – with universally positive student feedback on this immersive real-world experience.

• MSc in Finance, Real Estate and Hotel Development – this stands apart from ‘generic’ real estate master’s programs by uniquely combining a hospitality element (via the hotel development strand) with an explicit focus on the mechanics of real estate investment. The latter includes financial analysis, valuation, investment strategy, capital raising and private equity. The key learning outcome is to make students comfortable to go straight into a real estate advisory firm, or to find a position as an investment specialist.

Extensive use of industry partnerships
The professional focus of these Master’s emphasizes on direct contact with the industries and disciplines that each is dedicated to. As such, all 3 programs feature bespoke study trips to relevant destinations across the world, offering face-to-face contact with key industry players. These trips are unique opportunities to learn the business of hospitality from expert practitioners.

Study trips include Paris and Milan (Luxury, Management and Guest Experience); Berlin and Silicon Valley (Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation); and Amsterdam and Dubai (Finance, Real Estate and Hotel Development). All are made possible by the support of an extensive network of industry partners.

Importantly, the MSc in Finance, Real Estate and Hotel Development has been deliberately located at Glion’s London campus, on the doorstep of Europe’s premier real estate investment market. This allows the program team to select expert guest lecturers from the local investment, professional services and academic communities.

In addition, among the program-specific industry partnerships already in place are:

• Baccarat Crystal (Luxury, Management and Guest Experience) – includes visit during Paris study trip, plus guest lectures and internships
• Akrame Power and Fri Up (Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation) – presentations, internships, participation in Career Days and innovation event
• LaSalle Investment Management (Finance, Real Estate and Hotel Development) – participation in Real Estate Challenge and dedicated Career Day

Outstanding results at launch
Bringing one new Master’s to market is challenging. To launch three simultaneously is especially bold, particularly when their content represents a ‘stretch’ to Glion’s traditional subject-matter scope.

Nonetheless, ambitious targets were set for total student numbers across the three programs. The inaugural September 2019 intake exceeded the combined targets by 200% – a truly outstanding performance from a standing start, which underlines the merits of adopting an innovative and expansionary approach to building the graduate education portfolio.
