EhB Hotel Takeover

Last year Ms. Jincy Gregoir, HR coordinator of Crowne Plaza Brussels Airport, contacted us to possibly develop a collaboration in a sort of takeover project. We were charmed by the idea and decided to introduce this innovation in our Hotel Management curriculum for several reasons.

Our students accomplish an operational internship in their second year and a management internship during their last year. Unfortunately in the first year they only visited hotels without being active on the floor. As a result of this first work experience during this takeover the students of the first year will have a more representative view of a hotel’s organization. On the other hand, the benefit for the second- and third-year students is that they can try out other positions than the ones they opt for during their internships, providing them with a broader experience.

We partially redesigned partially our curriculum to integrate this innovative concept in order to inspire all students and of course to decrease drop-out in the first year.

The concept is structured as follows:
• Students of the first year will execute operational tasks, working at least two days in Housekeeping.
• Students of the second year will be involved in middle management, working at least a day in
Engineering.
• Students of the last year will perform management duties.

These assignments respect the philosophy of our program: the first year focuses on operational skills, the second year prepares students for middle management evolving to general management in the last year.

The project is dived in divided into three steps: the preparatory step, the actual takeover and the reflection step. The concept has been introduced this academic year and we have already finished the preparatory phase of the project.

1. Step 1: Preparation

First of all the second- and third-year students had to write a CV and motivation letter for the position, they wanted to apply for.
Third-year students who were interested in the GM position had to apply for this function by sending their CV and motivational letter to Crowne Plaza Brussels Airport. Afterwards they were invited to highlight their skills and motivation during a job interview with Mr. Arayer, the General Manager and Ms. Gregoir, HR coordinator. The General Manager of Crowne Plaza Brussels Airport selected third-year student Wim Vandermaesen as the General Manager student of the takeover.

The other third-year students as well as the students of the second year, had to apply for a position of their choice and send their CV and motivational letter to the school. , elucidating these during Based on the competences and motivation they demonstrated during a job interview with the school’s project coaches of the school they were assigned middle management and management positions.
The students of the first year will be assigned a function in an operational position without having to go through an application process.

2. Step 2: Actual takeover

The takeover will take place from Friday the 13th until Friday 20th of December 2019. Each student will be mentored by a staff member.
The evaluation will be done by a lecturer and the mentor. (50-50%)
As from next year the students of the third year will coach and evaluate the first-and the second-year students working in their department accounting for 20% of the total evaluation. One of our learning outcomes is that students our are able to coach and manage colleagues. This is one of the most challenging learning outcomes for a an educational institution. We are convinced that these management skills can only be developed on the floor.

3. Step 3: Reflection

After the takeover the second- and the third-year students need to reflect on their working experience and their further professional career. Some of these students will be inspired to apply for a similar internship position or perhaps to apply for a totally different internship position if the experience did not meet their expectations.

Students as well as the lecturers are very enthusiastic and are looking forward to participate. Our students prefer undoubtedly active learning, which is more engaging and more motivating for them. They are more eager to learn than when attending traditional colleges lectures.

Even though we are still in the introductory stage, the concept has already proved to be inspiring as several other hotels have shown their interest to become our next partner for a takeover.
