In the UK and across Europe, 54% of Dorchester Collection’s workforce originate from Europe; typically holding hard-to-recruit roles such as housekeeping and kitchen staff. When Brexit was announced, we needed to reinvent our people approach to sustain our business. While we always place people at the cornerstone of every business decision, experiencing high levels of engagement and higher than industry average retention as a result, we couldn’t rest on our laurels.

In a highly competitive sector we needed to become the ultimate employer; offering an employee experience which would ensure we attracted and retained the best people despite the uncertainty. We needed to further invest in people development ensuring our teams were inspired and performing at their best meaning we:

* Were fit for the future and could respond to change.
* Increase guest/employee engagement and loyalty.
* Attract and keep great employees.
* Are a respected employer brand.
* Continue to grow commercially.

In 2016-17 and formalising in 2018-19, the People and Culture Team (P&CT) conducted focus groups to see if our learning approach was fit for purpose. We took time to ensure we moved in a sustainable way and we found:

  • The formal structure was too difficult to adhere to because of operational constraints.
  • Employees wanted fun, interactive training which reflected real-life.
  • Not everyone wanted the same learning and therefore wanted more flexibility.
  • They wanted to drive their own development, working with us to support this.
  • People wanted work to be more meaningful – developing skills which would enable this.

In conjunction with our wider people strategy, P&CT launched a three-year plan which would address the challenges, future-proof our organisation and achieve our learning objectives.
