Best Initiative in Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility: Meliá Hotels Zanzibar

During the 17th edition of the Worldwide Hospitality Awards, Meliá Hotels Zanzibar received the award for Best Initiative in Sustainable Development & Social Responsibility. This award is attributed to an initiative or program that shows a brand or hotel group's commitment to sustainable development, fair trade and/or the social responsibility of the company towards local populations and staff, and/or tourist sites and natural resources.

At the Worldwide Hospitality Awards Ceremony last Monday, November 14at the InterContinental Paris LeGrand, Melia Zanzibar received the Award for Best Initiative in Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility. The candidates in this category were selected according to three criteria: The project's exemplary nature and scope linked to environmental protection, sustainable development, local community, staff; The originality of the project and the implication of the staff; Measurable efficiency of the actions taken for the benefit of the local population or natural sites. The award was presented by Ilham Kadri, President of Diversey Care.

In Tanzania, in the neighborhoods around its property in Zanzibar, Meliá has undertaken a series of initiatives with an aim to reduce poverty, to improve the employability of young local people and, in general, to improve the quality of local life by making the local community benefit from the growing tourism industry. Meliá would like to adapt this model to each regional context, with its social needs and challenges. (see dossier)

Deutsche Hospitality was one of the finalists. Recognizing its responsibility for present and future generations, Deutsche Hospitality engages in an economic, ecological and social approach. It has a clear mission: "think global, act local". Concomitantly, the group follows a clear mission: being responsible for present and future generations, involving all people by improving the environmental performance, supporting the international anchored human and labor rights and providing extensive information about the company's CSR program. A representative in charge of sustainability has been elected for each hotel. (see dossier)

Marriott International with its program "Worldwide Business Council France" was also a finalist. This program is a co-operation of 30 Managed and Franchised Hotels in France which volunteer together in committees to strengthen Marriott's 'take care' culture. The Business Council is divided into committees working on the following pillars: serving the local community, serving the Environment, creating youth employment, serving future generations, government affairs & business ethics, and promoting a healthy body and mind. Other initiatives also participated in the competition in this category:

  • AccorHotels - Diversity and inclusion initiatives in KSA. In Saudi Arabia, the group has developed innovative initiatives to promote integration of Saudi Nationals and particularly women to our industry. AccorHotels has been the first international Group to propose a 15-month program exclusively dedicated to Saudi women. The new certification bolsters recognition of Saudi women's eligibility for managerial positions. (see dossier)
  • AccorHotels - Planet 21 : Acting for Positive Hospitality. Since 2011, with the global sustainable development program Planet 21, AccorHotels has helped raise environmental awareness, contributed to concrete initiatives in key areas of concern, and improved performances. (see dossier)
  • Frasers Hospitality - “Just One” Programme. In a collaboration with WWF Earth Hour across all four Singapore properties as part of its pilot initiative, guests are invited to add a dollar to their bill upon check out which will be donated to WWF initiatives. (see dossier)
  • Hotel Park Split - Responsible Business Cleans the World! Hotel Park developed the first recycled soap factory in Europe, which employs 46 people with disabilities in Croatia. This project improves the hotel's competitiveness and reduces its operating costs. (see dossier)
  • Hotel Schweizerhof Bern – City Bees. The Hotel Schweizerhof Bern has become the home to three buzzing beehives, set up on the roof of the five-star hotel. As the first owner of city bees in the city of Bern, the Schweizerhof Bern is contributing to growing the city's bee population - and as a side benefit, produces its very own "five-star honey".   • Lux* Resort – Tread Lightly: 100% Carbon Free Stays. Tread Lightly is an endeavor to achieve zero carbon holidays and to empower and improve the livelihoods of local communities in one of the poorest regions of the countries where Lux* operates. The hotel group asks guests for a voluntary donation of €1 per Room Night. (see dossier)
  • Neya Hotels – Sustainability is Our Way of Life. The activity of NEYA Lisboa Hotel is based on its sustainable management plan and responsible business practices. It is a reference in sustainable tourism in Portugal. (see dossier)
  • Maya Boutique Hotel - Green Mobility Val D'hérens. The concept of green mobility relies on the creation of a network of electric cars and charging stations made available to clients by properties in Val d'Hérens, Switzerland. The loan is based on a "pay what you want" principle. (see dossier)
  • One & Only Wolgan Valley – A Carbon-Neutral Conservation. Located at a site that had been degraded by cattle grazing, this upscale Australian property could be developed after regenerating its natural environment. It has been carbon neutral for seven years and strengthened conservation efforts of local species(see dossier)
  • Park Inn by Radisson - Adding Color to Lives Campaign. Park Inn by Radisson has partnered with renowned street artist Joel Bergner to give a voice to young people at-risk around the world by creating murals in cities. (see dossier)
