In an interview with Le Monde, Thibaud Simphal, general manager Uber France, announced that the highly criticized service UberPop will be suspended.

With the nation's taxis in an uproar and in light of two heads of the American firm for Europe and France, Uber is giving up. In an interview with the French daily Le Monde, Thibaud Simphal, CEO Uber France, announced the suspension of UberPop, the service that allows individuals to sell chauffeur services using their own automobile.

"We decided to suspend UberPop in France, starting at 8pm this Friday evening [3 July]. First in order to preserve the security of Uber chauffeurs, which has always been our priority. They have been victims of violence in recent days. The second reason is that we hope to position ourselves in a spirit of appeasement, dialog with public authorities and to show that we are responsible. All in all, we are leaving the decision up to the Constitutional Council to be held in September concerning the article of the law known as Thévenoud [which organizes competition with taxis] regarding UberPop," declared the CEO in the paper's columns.
