_ Established over half a century ago, Relais & Châteaux is an association with some of the world’s finest hoteliers, chefs and restaurateurs that has set the standard for excellence in hospitality. Relais & Châteaux is not a chain, but a fellowship of fiercely independent people and unique properties that have together redefined luxury hospitality by emphasising holistic and personal experiences that transport guests, taking them on a sensual journey and introducing them to a deeper, truer understanding of the Art of Living.
Group Presentation _ The story of Relais & Châteaux begins in 1941 when two former music hall entertainers, Marcel and Nelly Tilloy purchased “La Cardinale”, an estate in the Rhône Valley. In 1952 the Tilloys began recruiting other hoteliers and restaurant owners that shared the same level of quality and excellence and passions for fine cuisine and Art de Vivre. In 1954, this group of kindred spirits merged together to create Relais & Châteaux. In the beginning, there were only eight establishments along the road between Paris and the French Riviera. Today, there are 518 members that are a part of Relais & Châteaux._ With the founding of the Relais & Châteaux association, its member establishments became the place to stay for those seeking fine dining and exceptional surroundings. In the mid 1950s the so-called ‘Blue’ train from Paris’ Gare de Lyon lead passengers along the route from Paris to the Côte d’Azur. A road was built in parallel to the train, and along the corridor from Paris to Lyon and Marseille outposts began to emerge where fine French taste flourished._ As the owners of one of these establishments, Marcel and Nelly Tilloy saw an opportunity to band together with other locales sharing the same unflagging passion for hospitality and excellent cuisine. Together with seven other establishments, all referred to as “relais de campagne”, they could offer an enticing gastronomic itinerary, encouraging travellers to explore all eight spots. Soon this itinerary acquired the moniker “La Route du Bonheur” or “Road of Happiness”. Today “La Route du Bonheur” stretches well beyond the borders of France and extends to all five continents of the globe._ For further information : _ Relais & Châteaux Press Kit
