The city’s hospitality sector follows strong seasonal trends, influenced by both leisure and corporate tourism.

Hotel overnight stays throughout 2024
Hotel overnight stays peaked in the summer months, aligning with the high tourism season. Based on the information from INE (National Institute of Statistics) in August 2024, Catalonia recorded 8,912,494 overnight stays, making it the most active month of the year. July followed closely with 8,288,156 stays, while June had 6,928,356.
The off-peak season saw a decline, with 2,477,268 overnight stays in December, 2,716,426 in November, and 2,296,616 in January. These figures were recorded in a region (Catalonia) where according to the Statistical Institute of Catalonia, the population on 1st January 2024 stood at 8,012,231 inhabitants.
Barcelona-El Prat airport: A key gateway
Based on the information form aena group, Barcelona-El Prat Airport continues to be a key gateway for air travel in Spain and Europe, showing strong growth in passenger numbers. In 2023, the airport handled 49.9 million passengers, with 36.3 million being international travelers, highlighting its global connectivity.
Domestic traffic accounted for 13.6 million passengers. The main purpose of travel was leisure (55%), followed by visiting friends and relatives (20%), business travel (17%), and other reasons (8%).
Passenger growth and air traffic expansion
As the second-largest airport in Spain, after Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat plays a crucial role in regional and international air traffic. In 2024, the airport recorded 55 million passengers, reflecting a 10.3% increase compared to the previous year.
Flight operations also saw a notable rise, reaching 347,977 movements, up by 9.1% from 2023.
