The Italian government has announced that several government-owned properties belonging to Italy's historic heritage will go to auction. The government hopes to attract hotel investors to raise funds to reduce the country's public debt.

One of the properties put up for sale is the island of Poveglia in Venice's lagoon, nicknamed the Island of the dead because it was used to isolate plague victims and later was home to a psychiatric hospital. Other historic buildings are also on the list including an abbey in the heel of the boot, a castle in Gradisca d'Isonzo, and a Military center in Trieste. The auction is scheduled for May 7, 2014 and addresses investors around the world.
