The Italian government has announced it is putting several of its properties up for sale to raise funds and reduce the national debt. It hopes to attract hotel investors with its authentic, historic buildings.
One of the properties put up for sale is the island of Poveglia in Venice's lagoon, nicknamed the Island of the dead because it was used to isolate plague victims and later was home to a psychiatric hospital. Other historic buildings are also on the list including an abbey in the heel of the boot, a castle in Gradisca d'Isonzo, and a Military center in Trieste. The auction is scheduled for May 7, 2014 and addresses investors around the world.
