Two British companies, Maiden Voyage and Capita Travel and Events, have launched a joint initiative to highlight female friendly hotels following a number of high-profile cases of sexual harassment and assault in hotels.

Hotels recommended by the scheme will have to meet a stringent set of criteria relating to safety and comfort concerns for women. Carolyn Pearson, chief executive officer and founder of Maiden Voyage, said: “We look at physical security elements, walk the area to assess the hotel location, and we expect our hotel partners to adhere to certain security measures, such as not announcing room numbers out loud.”

Research conducted by Capita found that 67% of women travellers felt at risk when staying away compared to just 19% of men.
