According to the New China news agency, the number of Chinese international travelers rose above 107 million in 2014 (+20% in 2013), with a volume of spending higher than €146 billion. This is good news for France, one of their most popular European destinations.
Today, only 5% of China's population holds a passport and most stays concern Asia and neighboring countries. Together, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao account for 70%. South Korea, Thailand, Japan and Vietnam follow. In terms of long distance destinations, the United States is in the lead followed by France. Measures to facilitate visa attribution has been an important part of attracting these visitors and benefiting from windfall.
A significant characteristic of Chinese tourism is a penchant for shopping in addition to discovering the sites. More than 40% of Chinese travelers have a budget surpassing € 2,000, of which two-thirds is set aside for shopping. Spending is estimated at €146 billion. Merrill Lynch forecasts €210 billion for 2019.
