According to the report published by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism industry contributed close to 7,000 billion dollars to the world economy.

According to the last report from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism industry accounted for some 7,000 billion dollars in the GDP worldwide in 2013, up from the 6,600 billion dollars it represented in 2012. The sector thus contributed to the international economy by about 9.5% and employed 266 million people.

As far as concerns the year 2014, the WTTC expects growth by 4.3% for the international tourism industry, outpacing 2.8% global economic growth, provided governments relax restrictive visa policies and adopt "intelligent rather than punitive taxation measures".

The WTTC estimates that the tourism industry created 4.7 million new jobs and supported nearly 266 million jobs meaning 1 in 11 jobs worldwide. The sector is expected to generate around 6.5 million new jobs.

Expanding middle classes especially in emerging markets should cause international travel to grow slightly faster than domestic travel. Particularly strong growth in spending in 2013 could be observed among travelers from China, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey and Egypt. Relaxed travel policies will benefit travelers from these supply markets.
