Cologne

Germany posted uneven performances in 2017, Cologne stands out.

With more than one million inhabitants, Cologne is today the fourth largest city in Germany and the leading city in North Rhine-Westphalia, a major economic centre.

Cologne is particularly famous for its cathedral, as well as for its carnival. If the city's heritage and its rich cultural offer (more than twenty museums) are significant assets to attract leisure customers throughout the year, business travellers remain of major importance in this leading fair city. In 2017, the city recorded 3,592,000 arrivals, 7.3% more than last year, for a total of 6,243,000 overnight stays, including 2,162,900 international overnight stays (+9.2%). Cologne's international attractiveness, both in terms of arrivals and overnight stays, is growing faster than the domestic clientele.

The Kölnmesse exhibition centre hosts numerous international trade fairs every year (Anuga, Intermot, Gamescom...). In full development, the city will soon welcome 75 000m² of additional offices and shops as well as a new congress centre of 80 000m², by 2019.

The hotel stock of the Rhine city includes 72 chain establishments with a total capacity exceeding 11,000 keys on January 1, 2018, an offer stagnating over the past year, due to several chain establishment closures and independent passages.

The French Accorhotels dominates the branded hotel market, with 2,700 keys, far ahead of the second group (Radisson Hotel Group, with 816 rooms). There are few large groups in Cologne.

With 10.8% growth, the city RevPAR recorded the best annual increase in Germany, with all segments growing. It is the average price that drives growth, increasing by 8% (to 111.3€) in the agglomeration, while the occupancy rate gains 1.9 points, reaching 75%. The Cologne results are well above the national average, with the country's RevPAR increasing by only 2.1% in 2017.
