July and August 2023 saw health warnings due to extreme heat be issued in Turkey, Greece, Andalusia, Italy, and the US as temperatures soared into the 40s degrees centigrade, as well as a series of catastrophic wildfires break out in popular tourist destinations across the northern hemisphere. A scene reminiscent of what we saw just last year. Let’s take a look back at some of the devastating climatic events experienced in Europe and North America and what the increasing regularity of these incidents could mean for high season tourism in the future.
