Resultats tourisme France

429 million nights were reported in Metropolitan France in 2017.

The Institute reveals 429 million nights in collective tourist accommodations in Metropolitan France in 2017. this figure refers to hotels, campgrounds and other collective tourist accommodations (tourism and hotel residences, holiday villages, family homes, youth hostels).

This represents a +5.6% increase and 23 million additional nights compared with the previous year. The occupancy rate thus surpassed figures from 2011 to 2016, ranging from 400 to 412 million nights. This year largely makes up for the lack of dynamism in 2015 and 2016, when terrorism attacks impacted results throughout France.

The number of nights of non-residents (domiciled outside the country) increased significantly by +8.8%, particularly due to the return of American and Chinese travelers. At campgrounds occupancy was up by +6.0% thanks in particular to German and Belgian clientele.

The trend is favorable to the upscale segment where the occupancy rate is showing strong growth: read our analysis "2017: Strong recovery of the French hotel industry". Occupancy is also goof in most metropolitan regions, read our analysis "Focus sur Paris, l’Ile-de-France et la province" and "Palmarès des grands agglomérations françaises en 2017".

According to provisional figures from Eurostat, in the European Union similar growth could be observed at +5.1%. With 471 million nights, Spain is in the lead, ahead of Metropolitan France (429 million), Italy (427 million) and Germany (400 million). It may be observed that in Spain, 2/3 of tourist nights are thanks to non-resident clientele whereas this share is smaller in France (31%).
