Television: French news doubles up

A French-style news network: the President Jacques Chirac wanted it, France 24 did it. In the United States has CNN and Voice of America, the United Kingdom has BBC World, Germany Deutsche Welle, the Arab world has Al Jazeera. Since December 6, 2006, France, too, has had its own 24- hour news network. This French-style CNN “offers a French point of view of worldevents,” explains Alain de Pouzilhac, the president of the network’s board of directors, “all the opinion leaders have the same reflex: to look for news morning and night”. But preferably in a language and with a point of view that are familiar to them. This is what the new network offers: “a different point of view for news and information that is in keeping with their culture”.The importance of its televised offer no longer needs to be proved to hoteliers. The guest’s first reflex upon entering his room is often to turn on the television. This gives him a link with his country, his language; and its cultural context affects his wellbeing. “Among the manyelements that contribute to their well-being, television is fundamental. TV5 Monde makes this comfort available to French-speaking travelers worldwide,” outlines Alexandre Muller. These travelers are particularly attentive to the programs offered by the television networks. “Hotel guests would also like to be able to choose from among several news sources while they have little time available to get news,” observes the president of France 24. “Our core target consists of opinion leaders from around the world, who are both French and foreign.
