What are the initial results of the 2018 / 2019 winter season?
All about prices
Compared to December 2017, the December 2018 RevPARs recorded a slight decrease (-0.8%) due to the drop in occupancy rates (-4.0 points). While average prices rose sharply (+5.6%), perhaps keeping some visitors away from Chamonix, the lack of snow cover on the ski slopes compared to the previous year also explains the drop in arrivals.
Thus, in December 2017, the Alps recorded much higher than normal snow cover, resulting in better skiing and attracting snow sports enthusiasts.
In January 2019, performance was significantly higher than last year. RevPAR gained 4.4% and was driven by both OR (+2.0 points) and ADR (+1.5%).
It should be noted that it is during weekends that tourists were most numerous in Chamonix hotels, which have an OR of 71.3% compared to 68.0% during the week. Moreover, prices go up during the weekend (+9.3%) with an average daily rate of €217.4 including VAT.
A supply under transformation
The historic Savoy Hotel, previously operated by Club Med, has been moved under the La Folie Douce banner. The popular mountain bar chain opened its first hotel in Chamonix combining private and shared rooms based on the hostel model.
Also in the economy segment, Rocky Pop Hotel (148 rooms) opened in 2016. Located in Les Houches, it wants to stand out from the competition with an interior decoration that appeals to pop culture.
Finally, the Italian chain of wellness centres QC Terme opened its first property in France in August 2018. Thanks to an investment of 12.5 million euros, it allows Chamonix to complete its wellness supply with this new 4,000 m² centre.
