"Perfectly acceptable, because it is comparable to the same period 2007. There is nothing to be embarrassed about": Hervé Novelli, the Secretary of State in charge of tourism summarized the summer season perfectly. After a month of July when the RevPAR progressed by 4.0%, August posted results that were almost identical to last year’s (+0.6%). In 2007, August ended with vertiginous growth in the revenue per available room close to 10%. This year it is difficult to be disappointed because August 2008 was on a par with a record month. France even ranks among the best in Europe. Average daily rates, particularly in the upscale, continue to drive growth (+4.9%). The only major negative point that will surely worry hoteliers: occupancy slipped below 70% and lost 3.0 points. On twelve months, the RevPAR remains correctly oriented with 6.5% growth.

Unlike July, which has a significant share of business clientele, the month of August is almost fully dependent on leisure tourism. Despite an unstable morale, the vast majority of the French did not disdain the pleasure of leaving on holiday. While restaurants might complain about a drop in results...
