
A New York State Assemblyman proposes a law that would oblige all hotels in the state to supply their mostly female cleaning staff with panic buttons in case of assault.
Democrat Rory Lancman would like to equip the cleaning staff with the technology that is already available to elderly who live alone and need immediate medical attention; and taxi drivers. It can come in the form of a beeper that is either worn around the neck or on a belt.The New York Hotel Workers' Union supports the law. A spokeswoman from The Hotel Association of New York City said the group shares the goal of keeping hotel workers safe.Hotels currently has security systems in place to protect their cleaning staff, such as the buddy system, leaving doors wide open, or sending up a male (instead of a woman) staff member on a late night room service request from a male guest.The New York Hotel Workers' Union supports the law.
