Brazil launches national hotel rating system

A national hotel rating system will be implemented across Brazil in advance of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, the country’s Ministry of Tourism has announced.

The Brazilian System for the Qualification of Accommodation Options will be overseen by the Ministry of Tourism in conjunction with the National Institute of Industrial Metrology and Quality. The 5-star scale system restricts the use of star ratings to hotels that have undergone an official qualification process.To request qualification, which will be valid for 36 months, hotels in Brazil must fill out a form and then an inspection is conducted to assess compliance with the requirements defined in the qualification matrixes. Participation is voluntary.“With standardized international reference information, foreign tourists will be able to count on one more precious information element when choosing Brazil as a destination,” says Mário Moysés, president of Embratur, Brazil’s official tourism board. With better-quality information we become more competitive in the international market.”Properties will be categorized under seven labels: hotels, resorts, farm-hotels, bed & breakfasts, historic hotels, inns and flat/apart hotel.To request qualification, which will be valid for 36 months, hotels in Brazil must fill out a form and then an inspection is conducted to assess compliance with the requirements defined in the qualification matrixes.
