Radisson Hotel Group has just announced the signing of the Radisson Blu Hotel, Barcelona Sagrada Familia through the rebranding of the Hotel Barcelona 1882.
The group's ambition was to develop its hotel portfolio in the Iberian Peninsula and this has been achieved with this new top-of-the-range property located in the very touristy district of Eixample, right next to the famous Sagrada Familia.
This signing marks an important moment for our company, establishing our first hotel in Barcelona – such a cosmopolitan and inspiring city - and at the same time strengthening our partnership with Union Investment. With this transaction, Radisson Hotel Group demonstrates its confidence in the market and its commitment to expanding presence across Spain, further supported by its recent and upcoming openings in Sevilla, Bilbao and Madrid.
Valerie Schuermans, Vice President, Business Development, Radisson Hotel Group
The German fund Union Investment made the acquisition, buying the hotel from Partners Group. The transaction price has not been publicly disclosed, but the deal is valued at 75 million euros. The purchase was made through its UniImmo fund. In total, Union Investment's global portfolio includes 80 owned hotels.
Barcelona has always been one of the most attractive hotel markets in Europe, with high barriers to entry for investors. With this transaction, Union Investment brings the Radisson Blue brand to Barcelona, once again demonstrating its expertise in proactively structuring transactions in the hotel sector.
Andreas Löcher, Head of Investment Management Hospitality at Union Investment
The 182-room hotel is expected to open in spring 2022 under the Radisson Blu brand and will offer standard and superior rooms as well as two junior suites. It will also include a bar, a restaurant and a fitness and wellness area. The hotel has thought of business travellers with 120 m² dedicated to work and meeting spaces.
To complete the experience, hotel guests can go to the top of the property to enjoy the rooftop and swimming pool, both of which overlook the basilica designed by the architect Gaudí.
The Radisson Blu Hotel, Barcelona Sagrada Familia is conveniently located and easily accessible from the Sagrada Familia metro station and the city's main train station, Sants Barcelona. It is also just 40 minutes from the international airport.
Luxury now rhymes with sustainable development, as this property proves with the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification it has obtained. A certification that attests that a building has been designed and constructed using strategies to achieve high performance in key areas such as ecology.
The opening of this hotel marks an important step in the group's ambitious expansion plan in Spain launched in 2018. The goal is to open 20 new properties within 5 years. In recent months, Radisson Collection hotels have opened in Seville and Bilbao, and later this year, Spain's first Radisson RED lifestyle property will open in central Madrid. These hotels join the group's Iberian portfolio which already includes the recently renovated Radisson Blu Hotel, Madrid Prado, the Radisson Blu Resort, Gran Canaria and the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Gran Canaria Mogan.
Radisson Blu celebrates 10 consecutive years as the largest upper upscale brand in Europe thanks to the trust of our partners and the loyalty of our guests. This fantastic hotel further cements the brand’s leading position in this segment. The property marks our 10th hotel with Union Investment across Europe and we look forward to our continued successful relationship. Southern Europe is a key focus market where we anticipate significant scale in the coming few years.
