Moxy Hotels is preparing to mark its debut in Spain with the inauguration of the Moxy Barcelona scheduled for the second quarter of 2024. The former Expo Hotel in Barcelona, formerly part of the Selenta Group portfolio, has undergone a significant transformation.
Nestled in the heart of the Sants district, the Moxy Barcelona will occupy a prime location close to the city's historic centre and the FC Barcelona stadium.
Acquired by Canadian asset management company Brookfield Asset Management for €440 million in the summer of 2021, it is an even bolder move given that Barcelona's hotel moratorium remains in place, although discussions in November raised the prospect of a possible relaxation allowing new 'unique hotels'. Introduced in 2015 and strengthened by PEUAT in 2017, the moratorium was intended to address a range of issues relating to the city's tourism boom.
With 414 rooms, the Moxy Barcelona will offer a rooftop on the tenth floor, housing a swimming pool, a chill-out area with cabanas, a bar and pop-up food stalls. The hotel will also feature a gym, nine meeting rooms and 'Plug In', a communal space dedicated to collaborative working and leisure.
At Moxy Barcelona, the traditional approach to reception will be replaced by check-in at the bar, allowing guests to check in seamlessly. This concept is designed to encourage interaction between guests.
Designed by Marriott International in 2013, the Moxy hotels specifically target a younger audience. The emphasis on large communal spaces redefines the conventional hotel experience by encouraging collaboration and interaction.
