Melía aims to open at least 25 hotels by the end of the year

After opening 32 hotels and 7,500 rooms by 2022, Melia Hotels International plans to open at least 25 hotels in 14 countries, including the debut of the Zel brand and the arrival of Paradisus in Spain.

At the Fitur event in Madrid at the start of 2023, Melia CEO Gabriel Escarrer said that despite geopolitical and economic conditions, travel demand has held up, predicting overall growth in 2023. He also says that "until Easter, the outlook is frankly good".

Last year, growth was concentrated in holiday destinations in South East Asia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. In 2023, Melia will expand its presence in 14 countries, including Spain, Italy, Malta, Albania, Cape Verde, Tanzania, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Gabriel Escarrer also points out that the group's objective is now "to add 30 to 35 hotels per year, which is what we can digest without creating a bottleneck".

Melia began the year with the signing of its first hotel in the Seychelles, which is scheduled to open in 2025, and another new development will be the arrival of the Paradisus brand in the Canary Islands, with the opening of the Gran Canaria hotel in March and Lanzarote in early April.

The Gran Meliá luxury hotel in central Milan with 86 rooms, the Gran Meliá Nha Trang, the ME Malta and the ME Guadalajara will also open. In Cuba, four openings are planned this year, one of which will be the 401-room 5-star Meliá Trinidad Peninsula in Cuba.

In Albania, two new properties will open, while in Spain, a new INNSiDE by Meliá is scheduled to open in Tenerife. In Asia-Pacific, the group will continue to open hotels in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, expanding its presence on the continent, where it will have more than fifty hotels by 2025.

Finally, 2023 also marks the debut of the Zel brand, created in December with Rafa Nadal. The Innside Cala Blanca Hotel will become Meliá's first ZEL, after the property reopens in 2021.

The hotel is located on the seafront in Palmanova and is a 4-star hotel with 180 rooms, a wide range of F&B, sports facilities, a fitness area and a spa.

In addition to this opening, another property of the new brand will open in Mexico, followed in 2024 by four other openings in Madrid, Marbella, the Canary Islands and South East Asia.
