One of Liverpool's oldest buildings on Dale street is set for a £35m makeover as part of plans to transform it into a boutique hotel. It is due for completion in late 2022.
The building was initially constructed for council staff in the mid 19th Century. Its architecture, influenced by Italian and French renaissance styles, was meant to convey the growing wealth of the city. The former council offices were sold in 2017.
Koncept ID has been appointed by The Fragrance Group, who owns hotels in Manchester, Devon and Bath, to lead the design. Designers will take lead on the project, working alongside contractor Russel WBHO. The renovation is slated to cost £35 million. Working alongside contractor Russell WBHO – previously Russells Construction, Koncept said it will look to "sympathetically reinstate original features".
Lead designer Jenny Denton said: “The Municipal Building is truly magnificent, and the potential was clear from our very first visit. The design focuses on breathing new life into original features, restoring the building to its former glory while injecting a good dose of sophisticated elegance. The new hotel will bring an exciting destination to Liverpool and with such a rich heritage, it’ll be a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.”
Now set to be known as Hotel Municipal, it will be a 4-star hotel with 180 beds. It will feature a brasserie with all-day dining menu, tearoom and cocktail bar, as well as a spa complete with pool, jacuzzi and treatement facilities.
