The Spanish hotel operator Barceló has inaugurated a 5-star hotel in Funchal, marking the opening of the chain's second hotel on the island of Madeira.
The Barceló Funchal Oldtown has opened its doors following the renovation of six 17th century buildings in the historic centre of Funchal. It is also "one of the most complex urban renewal projects" carried out by the group, which has managed to preserve the original facades and the old interior floors.
Located on Rua da Alfandega, the city's most important shopping street, one of the buildings was the headquarters of the Oliveira Bordados Enmaderienses factory, while another belonged to the Blandy family, one of the first founders of the Madeira wine trade.
In addition, important elements and remains from past centuries were discovered during the excavation process. Elements that were later incorporated into the decoration of the hotel, thus highlighting the local cultural heritage.
The hotel has 111 rooms, a gastronomic offer consisting of the à la carte restaurant A Bordadeir, the Noz Café on the outdoor terrace, the lobby bar and the rooftop bar B-Heaven, as well as a rooftop swimming pool, a solarium and three meeting rooms.
With this new property, Barceló Hotel Group reinforces its presence on the island of Madeira, where it already manages the Allegro Madeira hotel, a modern property reserved for adults and located a few minutes from the centre of Funchal.
