On November 7, 2017, Senegal inaugurated Blaise Diagne international airport in Diass, about 47 kilometres southeast of Dakar.

It is named after the first African deputy elected to the French Parliament in 1914. This project was backed for 10 years by two successive presidents.

By replacing the former Léopold-Sédar-Senghor international airport located on the outskirts of the capital city, Senegal hopes to make this airport a hub in Africa and a means to stimulate its economic development. With an estimated cost of $575 million, it is expected to welcome 3 million passengers in its first year.

Macky Sall, the Senegalese head of state accompanied by Presidents Adama Barrow (Gambia), José Mario Vaz (Guinea-Bissau) and Ali Bongo (Gabon), cut the ribbon and unveiled a commemorative plaque in the departures hall. The first commercial flights took place in the afternoon following speeches, a demonstration flight of a plane of the future company Air Senegal and a ballet by the air force.
