The Finnish airline Finnair and the Helsinki airport are currently doing tests to implement facial recognition control of passengers at check-in. The objective: to accelerate the control process and streamline the traffic.
Finnair and the Helsinki Airport Management organization Finavia are currently conducting tests to verify the applicability and effectiveness of facial recognition at check-in. Designed by the digital services development company Futurice, the interface used will be tested for one month on 1000 frequent passengers of the company. During this period, they will have to send their photo via an application and use the check-in desk equipped with the technology to verify that recognition has indeed worked.
The introduction of this system would allow passengers to travel without a boarding pass and thus facilitate the check-in process. Heikki Koski, Vice President of Helsinki Airport for Finavia has indeed declared in this respect: “Facial recognition is part of the larger megatrend of biometric recognition, and it will enable “Hands in the pockets” travelling, where you no longer need any travel documents. When all travel-related information is digitized, it takes less time and is easier to get through the checkpoints at the airport.”
Helsinki Airport and Finnair are not alone in testing this technology. British Airways recently introduced an automated facial recognition system for domestic travel. Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport is also testing a new system to compare the traveler's face with their passport photo. This technology could soon become widespread in all airports.
