Following on from the acquisition of Protea Hotels in 2014, Marriott has recently announced further expansion plans for Africa, with a view to opening or developing 37,000 rooms by 2022.

After acquiring Protea hotels for $210 million (178 million euros), in 2014, Marriott has announced its plans to invest further into their presence in Africa, to bolster their position as market leaders on the continent.

They plan to have opened, or be developing, 200 hotels with a total of 37,000 rooms, by 2022. The subsequent investment is estimated to be around 7.2 billion euros and is expected to create many thousands of jobs.

This announcement highlights Marriott’s commitment to expansion in Africa where it already operates in 20 countries on the continent.
