On one hand, we have those that are trying to completely get rid of it. Then there are other that decided to create a social hub to make the check in procedure an experience in itself.On the other hand, Holiday Inn introduced a new variation of the lobby with their social hub, that is in the testing phase in a single location in Atlanta. Here, the IHG brand blends the check in desk, bar, and restaurant in the lobby making the check in procedure not only an experience, but a product in itself.Starwood hotels announced last week that they are testing a new form of virtual check-in in five of their Aloft properties, confirming once again, the trend of virtual check in. In this latest case, the guest will receive a virtual key card in his NFC (near field communication) compatible cell phone. The day of check in, the guest will receive an SMS indicating his room number, thus completely bypassing the front desk.
