The one2one apartment rental platform between took the City State of Berlin to court following a reinforcement of laws regulating short term rentals between individuals.
Since January 1, 2014, the latter have been obliged to obtain autorization from municipal authorities in order to rent their accommodations to travelers. Any leaser that does not have authorization would have to pay a 50,000 euro fine. Yet, the Senate of Berlin suddenly decided to stiffen the rules by raising the amount of the penalty to 100,000 euros from May 1, 2016.
Moreover, Berlin authorities hope to require online platforms for one2one rentals, such as Airbnb or Wimdu, to provide data about the renter just in case the accommodations are being used illegally as a vacation cottage. This aims to better enforce the new regulations.
