Tourist tax: massive collection in sight for Airbnb

The platform is preparing to collect the tourist tax in 23,000 French municipalities from July 1, 2018.

Airbnb is expanding the scope of its tourist tax collection: after collecting more than 13.5 million euros in 50 major French cities in 2017, the platform will extend the process to more than 23,000 French cities from July 1, 2018. It should be able to collect a total of 20 million euros over one year.

Certain tourist areas such as the Atlantic coast, central France, Alsace and Burgundy are not yet fully affected by this decision.

The tourist tax created to finance the construction of tourism infrastructures would only be collected in France at 10% of its potential; 90% of these taxes would therefore not be paid back to the local authorities concerned.

In a quest for steady financial means, government authorities have collaborative platforms in their sights such as HomeAway which should also follow the initiative of AirBnB in such a context.
