
Lisbon was once the economic capital of the world in the XVth and XVIth centuries, until an earthquake and tsunami destroyed the city in 1755 followed by an occupation during the Napoleonic wars and the loss of its wealthiest colony, Brazil in 1822. In 1986, Portugal became part of the European Union and qualified for the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in 1998 before it began circulating the euro on 1 January 2002 along with 11 other EU members. Today, Portugal has a nonpermanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2011-12 term.
