Marriott hopes to reach one million rooms end 2015

Marriott has set a goal to reach 1 million rooms that are operational or under development by the end of 2015. This growth project covers all the continents.

While he is presently attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland (January 21 to 24), Marriott's CEO Arne Sorensen announced the desire to surpass one million rooms in operation or under development by the end of 2015.

"In 2014 alone, Marriott signed agreements for more than 650 hotels and 100,000 rooms to be added to its worldwide system over the next few years, a signing pace of nearly two hotel deals a day," declared Arne Sorensen. That same year, the group also added more than 46,000 rooms to its international network and thus had a portfolio of nearly 240,000 rooms worldwide either operating or under development.

Already present in 80 countries, Marriott should expand its footprint to 100 destinations worldwide. in the United States, the group wishes to strengthen itself on secondary and tertiary markets, while it plans to double its presence in Asia. Strong growth is also expected in the Middle East, South America and Europe, particularly through its new brand Moxy.

Marriott is also opening in emerging regions such as Haiti and Africa, where it is working with local partners. It plans to open a new hotel in Port-Au-Prince in February 2015 and wishes to develop its brands Moxy, AC by Marriott, Autograph Collection and Protea.

Marriott International was, on January 1, 2014, the third group worldwide in terms of number of rooms with 653,719 units in 3,783 hotels (data from MKG Hospitality, consulting firm founded by Georges Panayotis). (Read our report)
