Cannes: Hotel Martinez hires hawks to deter seagulls from approaching VIPs

As the Croisette hosts the Cannes Film Festival, the Martinez Hotel, a local landmark, has for the second consecutive year hired these quite special employees. Their mission? Deterring seagulls from getting as bold as paparazzi and approaching VIPs' tables.

As Cannes hosts the 69th Film Festival, the luxury Hotel Martinez has hired staff dedicated to a quite special mission: deterring seagulls. Like paparazzi, the birds tended to get emboldened and try to approach the outdoor tables at the hotel restaurant, hosting numerous stars and VIPs at this time of the year.

For the second year in a row, the Hotel Martinez thus decided to rely on an external security supplier, a falconer and his birds. These unusual staff members, which are Harris's hawks -a species hunting cooperatively in pack, which is rare among birds of prey-, are on a "bird scare" mission.
