Management Development Programme (MDP)

In 1997 Accor UK launched an ambitious vision for the future. Part of the vision was to see the network of Accor Hotels in the UK grow from 30 to a level which would make Accor a significant player in the UK market

Summary _ In order to achieve this expansion Accor recognised the importance of training and development to provide real career progression and ensuring a ready supply of well trained managers and team members to support the future growth of the network. Our programmes underpin the strategic business plan by ensuring that employees have the skills required to progress and to support our hotel openings._ The Management Development Programme (MDP), in particular, addresses the key challenge of developing General Managers from within to support the hotel opening plan. Around 18 aspiring GMs are selected each year following a rigorous assessment process. They undertake seven modules over a 12-month period, including a strategic business project and an outdoor ‘leadership development’ week in the wilds of north Wales._ Modules covered: -* Personal learning and Development Planning -* Sales -* Marketing -* Hotel Finance -* Revenue Management -* HR Management -* Business Planning _ Delivery methods include conference call, business simulations, projects, one to ones with Directors and real life experience._ During the year the delegates undertake an individual business project under the mentorship of their General Manager and present the implementation and evaluation results to the Managing Director and other Senior Managers in a “Dragons Den”. This exposes them to complex business challenges and financial concepts such as ROI, as well as fine tuning their presentation/persuasion skills, key attributes for a successful GM._ The MDP is now in its 15th year and is testament to our ongoing commitment to career progression. 175 aspiring mangers have Graduated from the programme and more than 70% remain with the business in most in key positions. We now have 180 hotels in the UK, and 65 of these are managed by Graduates of the MDP. Other MDP Graduates hold key positions in the network such as Operations Directors and Training Managers._ Please tell us why you think you should win?_ The Management Development Programme is a fanastic example of the HR strategy being aligned to the overall business strategy - the business challenge was to grow the network in the UK and the MDP has provided a pipeline of internally developed talent to support the expansion of the network in the UK. The MDP has the total support and involvement of the Accor UK Senior Management team and it is this collaboration between operational line management and HR which lies at the heart of the success of the programme._ Without this initiative we would not have been able to achieve this ambitious target of growing the UK network of Hotels in the UK from 30 to 186 over the last 15 years.
