Scandic Hotels is set to expand its Scandic Go brand with two new properties in central Gothenburg and Umeå, scheduled to open in 2026.
This development involves converting existing office buildings into hotels, adding a total of 276 rooms to the brand's portfolio. This brings the number of Scandic Go hotels in development to five, with 876 rooms across Sweden and Finland.
In Gothenburg's Lilla Bommen district, 176 rooms will be created from converted office space, while Umeå will see an entire office building transformed into a 100-room hotel. Property owners will begin these conversions in early 2025, with a targeted opening on the first part of 2026.
The increased demand for hotel accommodations, combined with lengthy development timelines for new properties, presents an opportunity for Scandic. By repurposing office spaces, Scandic can quickly expand its economy segment brand. These conversions, managed by property owners, also allow for the inclusion of other commercial activities within the buildings.
“We’ve been considering using office spaces for new Scandic Go hotels for some time, which is an important enabler to achieve our goal to add 1,000 to 1,500 rooms per year to our pipeline. Gothenburg, in particular, is a key destination for Scandic, where we have a strong presence in a robust hotel market. Umeå is also a stable market, attracting students and business travelers as well as summer and winter tourists. I am convinced that these new Scandic Go hotels in Gothenburg and Umeå will be the perfect complement to our existing hotel offering ” - Jens Mathiesen, President & CEO of Scandic Hotels Group.
Scandic Go, Lilla Bommen, Gothenburg
The buiding is located about 300 meters from Gothenburg’s Central Station and near the existing Scandic Göteborg Central. Alongside the hotel, that will offer 176 rooms, the building will feature a gym and a restaurant.
Scandic Go, Umeå
In Umeå, 250 meters from the central station, a former office building will be converted into a 100-room Scandic Go hotel. The property will be environmentally certified according to BREAM Very Good standards, ensuring lower operating costs through significant upgrades. The long-term lease agreement for this project was signed with property owner Diös.
“ I’m really looking forward to establishing more Scandic Go properties in strong, attractive hotel destinations like Gothenburg and Umeå. We’re bolstering the position of our new brand, which is already well-loved by guests, and I’m hopeful about continuing to add even more Scandic Go properties to our hotel portfolio. I’d like to thank the property owners for their excellent collaboration, and I look forward to cutting ribbons at these two fantastic new hotels in 2026” - Peter Jangbratt, Country Managing Director Sweden at Scandic Hotels.
Upon completion, Scandic will operate 10 hotels with a total of 2,846 rooms in Gothenburg. In Umeå, the new Scandic Go will bring the company's total capacity to three hotels with 458 rooms.
