
The month of January, which is usually marked by mountain holidays, was subject to high temperatures and the absence of snow at the beginning of the month caused some cancellations. However, the tourists were there, including the foreign clientele. As tourists hit the slopes in full force, the French hotel industry is slowly recovering from the impact of many ski seasons.
In January, France posted a 17.5% increase in RevPAR thanks to an ADR +18.6% higher than in January 2019. Attendance levels were almost identical to 2019 (-0.5 points only).
This month, the budget and midscale segments are the ones that managed to exceed their pre-Covid levels with +0.1 points and +0.8 points respectively, but the economy and upscale ones are also not far from recovering theirs (only -1.5 points and -2.1 points).
On the other hand, all the ranges managed to show a considerable increase in ADR (between +13.7% for the budget and up to +29.8% for the top of the range), thus leading to very encouraging levels of RevPAR: up to +25.1% for the top of the range.
From a geographical point of view, Paris is recording by far the best results in terms of both occupancy and ADR : +3% occupancy rate vs. 2019 and the capital is posting a 30.9% increase in ADR.

Finally, the Province is almost back to the January 2019 attendance level (-0.4 points) and shows a 12.8% increase in RevPAR thanks to a growing ADR (+13.7%).
More precisely, apart from Normandy (where Rouen conurbation in particular is struggling to recover its activity: still -16% behind in terms of RevPAR), all the French regions benefited from increases in RevPAR in January 2023 compared to the pre-covid period. The historical engines of tourism, Ile-de-France and Auvergne Rhône Alpes, showed the best hotel performances with RevPAR increases of over 20%.
In terms of occupancy, however, only Auvergne Rhône Alpes...
