
In addition to the innovative concepts that have already found their promoters, their business model and their identified customer base, other forms of commercial accommodation are enjoying growing success because of their originality and their zeitgeist. All they need to do now is confirm the success they have already achieved.

Unusual Accommodations:

By their very nature, unusual accommodations are original, even exceptional, ranging from the Hobbit Village, inspired by The Lord of the Rings, in Trout Creek, Montana, to the Gervassutti Bivouac suspended in the air on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif, and including Mongolian yurts and variously luxurious versions of treehouses. Diversity is at the very core of the unusual accommodation concept.
Nevertheless, a genuine market is emerging around this new leisure accommodation experience. An attempt at segmentation, conducive to analyzing evolution, identifies the most popular forms of unusual accommodations.
Currently, the approach is national, given the specificities of an emerging market. In France, the phenomenon is observed by two tandems: the Alliances consulting firm, a partner of the AbracadaRoom distribution platform, and the Hôtes-Insolites label associated with Protourisme.
To illustrate the complexity of the subject, the AbracadaRoom platform distinguishes around forty developed formulas (plus an "Unclassifiable" category for others): bubble, dome, zome, kota, lov'nid, igloo, yurt, chalet, trailer, tents, boats, tiny houses, and especially cabins, available perched, vegetated, on stilts, floating, etc. Alliances regularly updates its Unusual Accommodation Observatory, and the latest data on the market in 2022 indicate a remarkable progression compared to the situation in 2019.
According to David Paquet, director of the firm: "The sector was still a niche five years ago and is evolving towards an autonomous segment of hospitality. The latest data available for 2022 already show that the supply of unusual accommodation has greatly increased in France."
The Observatory lists 1,677 unusual accommodation domains in 2022, representing an 86% increase compared to 2019. Together, they host 6,012 accommodation units, a 72% increase from 2019, with 22,238 available beds, up 70% from 2019.
