easyHotel has announced that it has allocated €5 million to renovate its UK portfolio. The budget hotel chain aims to become a benchmark in the low-carbon hospitality segment. Further low-carbon investments in its European-wide portfolio are expected to be announced shortly.

The first five million invested will be used to refurbish twelve UK hotels in order to reduce the carbon footprint of easyHotel's property portfolio. This operation pertains to both owned and franchised hotels.

The properties concerned are located in London Shoreditch, London Croydon, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Ipswich, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, and Sheffield.

The renovation work will focus on improving the energy performance of these assets. This will include the installation of heat pumps, solar panels, new generation meters, and new air conditioning and monitoring systems.

The expected outcome of the programme is a 45% reduction in carbon emissions from the chain's UK hotel portfolio.

In parallel, easyHotel will act against the use of single-use plastics in its establishments and replace plastic room access cards with wooden magnetic cards.

Last September, the chain removed plastic bin liners from rooms and introduced refillable recycled bottles. As a result, the chain has reduced the volume of plastic waste in rooms in its UK properties by 42%.

The hotel industry accounts for 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At easyHotel, we believe it is our duty to fight this carbon footprint. Our business model is based on simplicity, with no frills and no empty space, so there is no room for waste. By optimising our infrastructure and rejecting single-use plastics, we aim to demonstrate that responsible hospitality is possible and viable, without compromising on comfort and affordability. This investment will upgrade our older properties so that our entire network showcases the roll-out of our low-carbon strategy.
