
4 American companies, 4 Asian companies, and 2 European companies continue to make up the world hotel offer’s top 10. Not many actors made any sort of an offensive in 2022. Each group has concentrated on its organic growth opportunities in a geopolitical and economic context that is complex to decipher. The result is a ranking that is strictly identical to that of the beginning of 2022 and shows only moderate growth.
The room creation momentum within this global top 10 has remained stable compared to 2021. The top 10 worldwide created 224,992 net rooms in 2022 after opening 253,811 in 2021. A low-to-average dynamic in the room creation rate, which stands at 432,510 keys between 2014 and 2023. This trend should be observed with caution, as it is influenced by mergers, which cause certain players to grow rapidly, outside of organic growth.
The number 1, Marriott International, surpassed 1.5 million rooms in 2022 with a 3.2% growth in its stock compared to 2021. This pace is in line with that of 2021, when the American giant increased its stock by 4%. The 46,035 net rooms opened during 2022 enabled it to maintain a comfortable lead of 253,308 keys over its challenger, the number 2 Jin Jiang. This is the largest gap in absolute terms in the top 10.
The American number 1 is nurturing its pipeline in Asia and the Middle East, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by destinations, which are less mature than Europe or the United States. The group has announced the opening of 13 properties in Asia Pacific by the end of 2023, with a particular focus on destinations that are still less developed in terms of tourism. It intends to capitalise on the development potential of the Asian markets while positioning itself as a pioneer in the development of tourism in certain territories and allowing its investor partners to benefit from less expensive real estate than in mature destinations.
