The Huazhu Group has recorded the highest growth in terms of hotel stock, moving up the world rankings. With the acquisition of the German hotel group Deutsche Hospitality, Huazhu intends to conquer the European market in the coming years.
Park's evolution : +23,2%
Hotels' number 2021 : 6 802
Rooms' number 2021 : 607 137
The second largest Chinese group got the strongest growth in the Top 10 with +23.2%, or 114,201 new rooms (MKG estimate based on actual Q3 2020 vs. 12/31/201), moving it up 2 places in this ranking. This is the second year in a row that it has exceeded 100,000 additional rooms. On the one hand, its organic growth was significant. The effect of the health crisis was slightly shorter in China, so the impact compared to its Western competitors was also felt. On the other hand, Huazhu finalized the acquisition and integration of the German group Deutsche Hospitality (acquired for 700 million euros in 2019) and its flagship brands such as Steigenberger, Zleep, Intercity, Jaz in the city, Maxx, among others. This acquisition allows the group, founded in 2005, to gain a significant foothold in Europe, a market dominated by its capitalist partner Accor.
The expansion of the Chinese group will therefore also take place through that of Deutsche Hospitality. Indeed, despite a complicated period for MICE which is an important segment for their brands, the group recently acquired by Huazhu plans to grow from about 130 hotels worldwide to 500 by 2026. This will include the arrival of two new Steigenberger hotels in China in early 2022.
