With one exception, with Fairfield Inn & Suites now ranked 28th, the top thirty hotel chains were identical at the end of 2016. Most of them showing stable growth.
The Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands remain at the top of the ranking with a net increase of 16,329 rooms, an increase largely driven by the Holiday Inn Express brand, which grew by 15,389 rooms over 2017. At IHG, lifestyle brands grew the most strongly with +19.5% for Indigo Hotels, +22.6% for the EVEN Hotels brand focused on wellness and sports, as well as a doubling of the park for the HUALUXE Hotels & Resorts brand created for the group’s development in China. IHG announces a pipeline of 21 locations for this brand with 7 locations currently open.
Home Inns remains in second place despite a slowdown of its growth from +11.4% in 2016 to +4.4% in 2017, reaching 306,416 rooms.
In 3rd place, Best Western timidly resumed growth after a 5.9% decline in the supply in 2016, the brand grew by some 2,869 rooms and achieved almost +1% growth.
7 Days Inn maintains its fourth place with stable growth at +9.7% after +8.4% growth in 2016. The brand thus recorded an increase of 24,947 rooms. At Jin Jiang Int. Hotel Group, the Sarovar (+21.7% or 1,094 keys) and Royal Tulip (+28.5% or 1,015 keys) brands made the biggest growth.
ibis Megabrand of Accor Hotels maintains its 5th place with a growth of +7.1% after a growth of +6.4% in 2016. The group lost more than 6,000 rooms with the hotelF1 brand and pushed the growth of its lifestyle brands. 25hours hotels went from 1,012 to 1,347 rooms with 5 properties, representing 1,248 rooms in the pipeline.
Hampton by HILTON grew by 14,220 keys with a 6.4% growth in its room inventory close to the 6.1% of the previous year. The CURIO COLLECTION BY HILTON brand grew by 3,306 rooms or nearly +48% and the recent canopy BY HILTON brand, with a pipeline of 18 hotels by 2020, opened a second property in 2017.
HANTING HOTEL of Huazhu maintained its 7th place with a growth clearly slowed compared to 2016 since the brand progressed +0.9% compared to +7.6% in 2016. In 2016, the group joined forces with Accor Hotels to develop the French group’s brands, ibis Megabrand, Mercure, Grand Mercure and Novotel in China.
The leading brand of the giant Marriott International, which operates 30 brands, appears in 8th position with a stable progression of 3.1% to reach 200,280 keys. The group has also opened 13 Moxy properties in 2017 for an increase of 3,279 rooms as well as 24 AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION HOTELS or 4,881 rooms and 128 AC HOTELS to reach 17,240 rooms.
