Which Hotel Groups expand in Africa in 2020?

Hospitality ON takes a look at the latest additions in Africa at the beginning of 2020. Best Western Hotels & Resorts, IHG with Voco, Radisson and ONOMO Hotels are growing their African portfolio with one or more openings in 2020.

Best Western Hotels & Resorts opens three hotels in Kenya

The American hotel group announced bringing 210 additional rooms to its South African portfolio at the beginning of 2020, comprising of 3 properties:

  • Best Western Plus Westlands (101 rooms, opened since mid-December 2019)
  • Best Western Kisumu (44 rooms, opened since late December 2019)
  • Best Western Azure Airport (64 rooms and 7 suites, opening in February)

Each of them has complimentary Wi-Fi, hot breakfast buffet, and amenities such as meeting facilities and a F&B offer (restaurant, bar, lobby bar, or coffee shop). Also, guests can enjoy the spa at Best Western Azure Airport and the gym at Best Western Plus Westlands.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) brings Upscale voco brand to South Africa

IHG announced on January 30, 2020, the newest voco hotel, to take place in South Africa, after United Kingdom and Australia. Featuring a strong visual identity, imperative yet flexible standards and all the strength of the group network, the brand was meant to accelerate hotel conversions and achieve 200 voco properties in 10 years worldwide. Over the last year, voco experienced a strong growth, with openings across the Europe, Middle East and Asia. With the signing of voco The Bank, Rosebank in South Africa, the brand sets a first foot on African soil, thanks to a partnership with Valor Hospitality Partners Africa.

The 131-room hotel is expected to open in 2020. Close to Johannesburg, the hotel will offer a two-level restaurant, a lounge and bar, as well as 3 meeting rooms, accommodating approximately 80 people for business travellers.

Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit, first Radisson branded hotel in South Africa

Radisson Hotel Group has a strong pipeline of hotels under development in Africa. The group announced last year tree Radisson Hotels to open in Madagascar in 2020 and 11 new hotels in Africa including a second Radisson RED in South Africa with Radisson RED Johannesburg Rosebank to open in 2022. But for the first time, the Radisson brand is entering South African market early 2022, with Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit.

Close to the Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon, the Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit will feature 138 keys and offer a wide range of F&B options with local and international cuisine at the all-day dining restaurant, a bar, a coffee lounge, a pool bar and traditional lapa. Also, there will be further amenities such as an Amani Health Spa, two swimming pools, a fully equipped gym, a kid’s club, an equestrian center, and a meeting and events area (including various meeting and board rooms, a pre-function area and a business center).

HOEDSPRUIT

ONOMO Group comes to Maputo, Mozambique

Last but not least, ONOMO Hotels is coming to Mozambique’ capital, Maputo, after developing in Morocco and Cameroun. The new property, ONOMO Hotel Maputo, opened on December 1st. It is the seventh hotel in the Southern African portfolio of the group, among which 5 are in South Africa and one in Rwanda.

The hotel, located on Avenida 25 de Setembro, in the city centre of Maputo, has 165 rooms as well as a rooftop and an infinity pool. It is of one of the hotels with the largest capacity of the city, targeting both leisure and business travellers.
