The Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg is a cultural and economic powerhouse in Germany, consistently drawing millions of visitors each year. With a significant rise in tourism and an impressive capacity to host major international events, Berlin has positioned itself as a key player in both the hospitality industry and broader economic growth. From historical landmarks to global trade fairs, the region has built a robust tourism sector that supports its economy and enhances its international reputation.

According to the information from the Office for Statistics of Berlin-Brandenburg in 2023, the region experienced an increase in tourism, with around 12.1 million visitors—a 16% rise compared to the previous year. These visitors contributed to nearly 30 million overnight stays in hotels, representing a 12% growth from the previous year, according to the same source.

Continuing with the data from the Office for Statistics of Berlin-Brandenburg, the region's hospitality sector was supported by 718 accommodation establishments in 2023, ranging from high-end hotels to budget-friendly options, highlighting its capacity to accommodate a wide range of travelers.

Economic  impact of tourism

Based on the information from the site visitBerlin, Berlin's official destination marketing and management organization, tourism has become a significant part of Berlin's economy, especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall. More specifically it is highlighted the fact that the number of overnight stays has increased from 2.4 million in 1989 to 11.3 million, with international visitors contributing to this growth. In 2013, international tourists made up 43% of the total visitor count, compared to 27% in 1989. Continuing on the same source, the tourism sector has generated approximately 275,000 jobs and contributes around €11 billion annually to the city's economy.

Regulatory environment

It needs to be noted that according to the information from the Berlin Regulations and Case Law Database, the city imposes a tourist tax policy, requiring visitors to pay 5% of the assessment basis as a City Tax on overnight stays ( : Law on an Overnight Stay Tax in Berlin of 18 December 2013), while based on visitBerlin, a policy change in April 2024 removed the previous exemption for business-related stays, except for trips arranged before this date.
