Accor and sbe have signed an agreement to rebrand the luxury hotel the Curtain (120 rooms) as a Mondrian Hotel.
The Mondrian brand exited London in January 2019 when the 359-room Mondrian London, located in the south bank, became the Sea Containers London, managed by Lore Group.
Now, Accor and sbe plan to turn the 120-guestroom hotel The Curtain into the Mondrian Shoreditch London in spring 2021. It will so become the sixth hotel in the portfolio and be considered as the brand new European flagship.
The property will undergo a refurbishment and include a rooftop lounge called the Rumpus Room, a restaurant by chef Dani Garcia, and continued operations of The Curtain Members Club. This will be the first opening of a dining space with sbe in London for chef Dani Garcia.
This opening marks Accor's desire to develop lifestyle hotels as its leaders see this sector as a potential for major growth in coming years. The hotel group bought half of sbe in 2018 for $ 319 million and is planning to develop both the sbe's Mondrian and Delano brands.
Mondrian was initially a U.S.-focused hotel collection, with properties in Los Angeles and Miami. It eventually expanded to New York City and Doha in 2017. sbe is planning to open ten additional Mondrian hotels by 2022, especially in France, Germany, Singapore, and Thailand. The hotels Mondrian Bordeaux (97 rooms) and Mondrian Cannes (75 rooms) are scheduled to open in 2021. The brand could expand in the next few years to as many as 50 hotels.
The Delano brand will open a 68-room resort in Porto Cervo, on the Italian island of Sardinia in 2023. The hotel could be the first of seven Delano properties to open in Europe. The lifestyle segment is currently booming as IHG is planning to expand its Voco brand of hotels, and Hyatt is expanding its Thompson Hotels brand.
