Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour - reimagined 5-star French luxury and local cuisine in the world's most exciting city

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour

The much-anticipated Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour opened its doors in 2017, making it the first new-build, international luxury hotel to open in Sydney’s CBD this millennium. Centrally located opposite the International Convention Centre, the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour plays a major role in the ongoing revitalisation of the vibrant Darling Harbour precinct. It also heralds the renaissance of new hotel development in Sydney, with over 40 hotels scheduled to open in the next five years to support the city’s tourism growth.

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is the first new-build 5-star hotel the city has seen in more than 15-years, and has quickly positioned itself as a flagship property not only for AccorHotels but for the Australian hotel industry. With an aim to be widely recognised as a world-class hotel, the property sets the benchmark for waterfront sophistication with 590 spacious rooms and suites that combine French chic, modern luxury and breathtaking panoramic views. The hotel's leisure facilities are second to none, with a stunning outdoor infinity pool, gym, 4 vibrant restaurants and bars including a Champagne Bar, and top-floor Executive Lounge. One of the most elegant hotels in Sydney, the Sofitel Darling Harbour has incredible views from all rooms and suites as well as from the top floor club, Millesime.

History & Origins

Every Sofitel around the world is culturally linked with a city or region in France that shares similar attributes in terms of culture, landscape and design. Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour’s link is Marseille, the epitome of vibrant waterside sophistication. From industrial ports to sophisticated harbours, the energy of transformation which runs through Marseille and Sydney’s Darling Harbour make them an appropriate pairing.

Each Sofitel hotel internationally has a number of identifying elements which they adopt to help bring the hotel to life and as the flagship property in Australia. Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is the new benchmark. From a signature fragrance, to evening candle lighting ceremonies, and a welcome drink - Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is a destination in its own right.

Excellence in Experience

Candle Ritual

Paris was the first city to flood its streets with light after dark, illuminating its streets with more than 56,000 gas lamps. As such, Paris became known as La Ville Lumiere, or, the city of light. The Sofitel Candle Ritual is a dramatic homage to the passage of day into night.

The Art of Sabrage

The French tradition of ‘sabrage’ – slicing open a bottle of Champagne with a cavalry sabre – brings together expertise, drama and a luxurious sensory experience for guests at Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour. The glorious art of ‘sabrage’ goes back to the days after the French Revolution when Napoléon Bonaparte’s cavalry, whose weapon of choice was the saber, used the trick for celebratory bubbles on the go.

Polishing Ritual

The Sofitel ‘Name Plate’ is positioned at the entrances of every Sofitel hotel worldwide. At 7am each morning, a member of the concierge will complete the polishing ritual of the name plate. The daily polishing is conducted to demonstrate to all who pass by the Sofitel refinement and the hotel's ambition and pleasure to constantly strive towards perfection.

Facilities & Innovation

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour boasts an array of unique dining experiences, from a French-inspired grill combining French flavours with locally-sourced produce at Atelier by Sofitel, to poolside cocktails at Le Rivage Pool Bar, watching an iconic Sydney sunset at award-winning Champagne Bar or coffee and croissants on the go at the Esprit Noir Lobby Bar.

During the height of Sydney’s COVID-19 lockdowns in 2021, the property unveiled ‘Atelier at Home, by Sofitel’, a cook at home menu of French dishes with easy to follow instructions like Marseille Rock Fish Soup and traditional style Pot De Crème Tatin, ready for customers to become ‘Le Monstre sacré dans votre cuisine’. The meals were available to order with 24 hours’ notice, seven days a week, and allowed for the property to continue its dining experiences with guests even while businesses were shuttered.

Accomodations & Facilities

The property features 590 luxurious rooms, including 35 lavish suites spread over 35 floors in the area’s tallest building. The rooms, which have become an iconic location for social media activity capturing some of the city’s most stunning outlooks, allow guests to enjoy the latest technology and contemporary design with chic French touches. The property’s gym also boasts floor to ceiling windows, with sweeping views across Darling Harbour.

With nine flexible meeting spaces, including a grand 450-person Magnifique Ballroom, the hotel is also well-positioned to host any style of event, from haute couture fashion shows to gala dinners and large-scale meetings or conferences with state-of-the-art audio visual technology.

As part of the hotel’s continued innovation and desire to pioneer the digital guest journey, in mid 2021 it introduced  revolutionary self check-in technology allowing guests to seamlessly check-in, pay and receive their room keys via new digital kiosks within minutes of arrival. The self-service model was also extended to in-room experience, allowing ordering via bedside QR code technology.
