According to the Greek central bank, the country's tourism industry recorded an increase of 38.5% in turnover in May, bringing hope to a country ravaged by the economic crisis.

The figures published by the central bank show a net growth of tourism in Greece, led by strong foreign attendance in the destination. The sector has effectively posted an increase of 38.5% of its turnover during the month of May, and of 15.5% over the first five months of the year, compared to the same period last year. The good news is welcome in a current context of economic crisis, as tourism represents 17% of the country's GDP and employs about 1 in every 5 people.Over the year, sector leaders hope for a 10% increase in turnover, to 11 billion Euros, and a record number of 17 million visitors, a million more than in 2012.According to the press, Yannis Retsos, head of the Federation of Geek Hoteliers, characterized these figures as "a very positive sign" before expressing his certainty that "this rising trend will continue during the coming months. Thanks to tourism, Greece can make a first step towards growth".The rise in Greek tourism industry indicators is another example of the importance of the sector in the overall economy of a country, and on a more global scale, the importance of supporting the hospitality and tourism industry for the economic future of the whole of Europe.
